Hikikomori BBC Article

Hikikomori is a new mental ailment affectting Japanese teenagers. The teenagers are simply becoming hermits. They lock themselves up in their room and withdraw from society. I am the only one who suspects this condition could easily cross over to Europe and the States?

Question: do all these "cocooned" teenagers have Internet/ADSL/SMS in their rooms? or just TV and phone?

Another thing I wonder is what Japanese parents do when their kids act up. Spank them? Cut off their allowance? Kick them out of the house?

But of course the trend is worrying. I'll ask my relatives if they have noticed similar behavior in their kids.

Scratch those questions: I looked up the Wikipedia link (thanks!) and found out more. (Not that it increased my sympathy for the spoiled-rotten "victims"...)
